Several Examples of GIS Applications in Urban and Environmental Planning

Each organized society pays very much attention to the problems of urban and environmental planning. Those activities are very complex and with long-term influence on a large population. Thus, it is of great importance to analyse carefully all the possible consequences which an urban plan can make, as well as all the factors that influence planning. After the development of computer science and information technology, the information systems have become a powerful tool for managing spatial resources, and they have been used in a large number of public activities segments. One of the most important segments where these systems were used is urban and environmental planning. In the Computer Graphics and GIS Lab at the University of Ni^, an extensible object-oriented Geographic Information System (GIS) toolkit for inexpensive hardware platform, named GINIS, have been developed. This tool supplies user interface functions, input, storage, retrieval, as well as display and analysis of data about spatial objects. The GINIS system has been used as a basis for the development of numerous different end-user GIS applications. This paper deals with the presentation of several such application. On of the applications is GINIS-INDOC, a documentation management system which makes easier the manipulation, evidence, monitoring and technical documenting of spatial and urban plans. Then PLEX, a knowledge-based system for urban planning is also presented. Founded on the knowledge base, which PLEX uses, an urban planner can make the best decision while planning. GINIS-ECO, the programme for the ecological evaluation of space is also presented. GINIS-ECO programme was made for the purposes of collecting and updating of ecological data, their presentation and combination according to different criteria.
